Members can shape the future of their own MGI regions: Join the European Board and build a business together
“Serving on your Regional Board requires commitment, preparation, and a willingness to actively contribute –however, the benefits make it well worth the effort!” says Andreas Klier from Pape & Co., as he reflects on his time serving on the European Board.
What did you gain most from your experience?
The greatest benefit for me was exchanging ideas with the other Board members. This kind of cross-border exchange doesn’t typically happen within a single company, and it opened up many new approaches that we were able to successfully implement in our firm.
This experience also helped me develop new ways of thinking about problem-solving. Additionally, stronger professional bonds were formed, making many processes smoother and more efficient.
What are some of your greatest or fondest memories?
One of my fondest memories is of the many conferences, especially the Social Days, which were always a highlight.
I particularly remember the conference in Munich, where different teams had to build catapults using the same tools and materials, with the goal of launching a Kinder egg as far as possible. During the presentations, we were all in tears laughing because most of the catapults didn’t work as expected. It was an unforgettable mix of creativity and fun that really strengthened the team spirit.
What was your biggest contribution to MGI as a network?
One of my passion projects was the development of the International Tax Seminar. While many contributed to its growth and took on speaking roles, it was important to me to design the seminar in a way that fostered collaboration within the network.
Together, we turned it into a key platform for exchanging knowledge, providing MGI members across Europe with valuable insights into the tax issues of various countries.
Our collective efforts are always stronger than those of any individual, and we still have work ahead to expand the tax seminar beyond Europe.
What does MGI expect from you (as a member of the European Board)?
Be present at all Board meetings—without full participation, things won’t function properly.
Prepare for the meetings and make time for follow-ups. Without this time set aside, it’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day business.
Actively contribute to discussions, as this is how we achieve the best results together.
Visit as many regions and events as possible to get to know your partners abroad.
One piece of advice you would give to someone considering volunteering…
“Just do it! Talk to current, or former board members to get a personal sense of what to expect and what is expected of you. Everyone learns from each other, and it’s a great opportunity to grow and contribute to the network.”
